How Long Does Regular Mail Take From State to State?

If you drop a letter or package off at the post office, it usually takes one to three business days for your mail to arrive. But if you send something to someone across the state or even the country, it can take much longer. The reason why depends on many factors, including distance and the type of mailing service you use.



The United States Postal Service has a tool on its website that lets you estimate how long it will take for your mail to get to its destination. You just need to enter the origin and destination ZIP codes, and the tool will provide a delivery time. This is a helpful way to avoid wasting money by sending your mail late, as well as to plan ahead for when your package will arrive.


USPS also has different shipping options to suit your needs. For example, if you’re sending a small package across the state, USPS offers Priority Mail that will get your package to its destination in one to five business days. It’s worth mentioning that the service is subject to weather and other delays beyond your control, but it can still be an excellent option for people with deadlines to meet.


During our own testing of USPS delivery times, 13News found that most packages arrived within the two- to five-day standard that was introduced last fall. However, some first class packages that were sent from Indianapolis to Austin, Texas and from Minneapolis to York, Pennsylvania took an extra day or two.
